The University of South Carolina Columbia, also known as USC, SC, or Carolina, is a public, co-educational research university located in Columbia, which is the state capital and largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, heaving a population estimated at a number of more than 127 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Columbia is the county seat of Richland County (also spreading into neighboring Lexington County) and it is the center of a metropolitan statistical area of more than 744 000 inhabitants, the largest within the state.
SC was founded in 1801 as South Carolina College, by an act of the General Assembly initiated by Governor John Drayton, to promote harmony between the Lowcountry and the Backcountry. It is the flagship institution of the University of South Carolina System, and it offers more than 350 programs of study leading to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, through 14 degree-granting colleges and schools, having an enrollment of approximately 28 500 students.
USC has been nationally ranked for many of its educational programs, by various significant publications, including by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked the university as follows: No.1, for 13 consecutive years, for its undergraduate international business program, 3rd the for Doctoral school psychology program, 4th for the Graduate social psychology program, 110th among Natinal Universities and 32nd among Best Values in Public Colleges, to name a few.
USC's athletic teams are known as the South Carolina Gamecocks, who compete in 19 varsity sports, in the Southeastern Conference (except for men's soccer which competes in Conference USA), including in women's track and field, in which they won the 2002 NCAA championship, women's equistrian, in which they won the 2005 & 2007 National Championships, as well as basketball and baseball, in which the university has produced Olympic medalists. The Gamecocks have also been 2005 NCAA runner-up in women's track & field, NCAA runner-up three times in baseball (2002, 1977, 1975), 1993 NCAA runner-up in men's soccer, and 2005 & 2006 NIT championships in men's basketball.
